SOCIATE’s intern on: Starting a YouTube channel

Written by Zainab Jimoh, SOCIATE’s PR and Marketing intern

Starting something new is hard for most people, especially when they have to step out of their comfort zone.

It took me a year to launch my YouTube channel and, of course, there was the classic back and forth of deciding whether or not I should create one. Setting it up was the easiest thing ever.

So, if you’re like me, I would encourage you to go for it. Set it up.

Once you’re set up, get the word out: After setting up my channel, the next thing on my mind was promoting my channel and the content I created on it. My content is related to my lifestyle, and Korean content I enjoy watching. Don’t underestimate the power of word-of-mouth. Telling your family and friends about your new project is sure to get more eyes on what you’re doing. Remember we’re all social creatures.

Getting in touch with family and friends is the most organic way to get subscribers and views. Your inner circles are likely to support you and share your videos on their social platforms, which will help you gain more subscribers and viewers.

Social media is your megaphone: The next step I took was also promoting my YouTube channel on my social media platforms – Instagram, Facebook, and Snapchat. The most prominent one is Instagram. I upload a short version of my videos using the right hashtags. There is a lot of lifestyle and Korean related content on Instagram, but just by using the right hashtags, my video pops up on the explore page as a recommendation.

Post content that both you and your audience will enjoy: Remember to be mindful about the content you post. On-trend content gets a lot of views because everyone is looking for such content. You could ride along on the fame and get a lot of views, subscribers, and engagement at the same time. I personally find using YouTube easy, and as long as you are interested, you will be ready to commit and be consistent with your content.
